This Giclee print shows the Panel of the Lions in Chauvet Cave, France, painted about 35,000 years ago. The cave (also known as Chauvet-Pont-d’Arc cave) is located in the Ardèche region of southern France and was discovered in 1994. The Lion Panel, located at the end of the cave, is unique in Paleolithic art. In the first print, we mainly see a pride of lions chasing a a small group of bison. In the second print, we see more of the entire panel, including the bison which are obviously frightened and are all huddled together. The lions have their jaws tensed and their gazes fixed on their prey, and the bison can do nothing but try to run away. The incredible realism of these animals has been acknowledged as among the finest in cave paintings.
