This print captures two sculptures of a Bull and Cow Bison dating from 15,000 years ago in the Le Tuc d'Audoubert cave, Ariege, France, located in foothills of the central Pyrenees. The art was found in a remote cave chamber shortly after three young brothers unexpectedly discovered the cave in 1912. The clay sculptures are considered a unique wonder of the art world and examples of supreme artistic mastery of the period. Each of the sculptures measures about two feet long, eighteen inches high. They are three to four inches thick, with surfaces that were given a wet finish to make them smooth. The finger strokes of the artist can be seen running down the length of the animals, while the mane and beard are etched with a tool. Markings along the jawbones are done by the artist's fingernail. There is no doubt about the age of these sculptures which have definitively been dated by scholars to the Ice Age and Paleolithic period, during which time the Magdalenian people of southwestern France created other masterful cave art as well.

Our 1-inch thick, polished blocks are crafted using a unique casting method that ensures crystal-clear, deep, and realistic images. The Giclee process is used to create the print, and it’s been enlarged for an unforgettable viewing experience. Just put it on a shelf, desk, or table and enjoy! Because of the very unusual nature of this image, we are offering it in an 8x10” size, along with the regular 7x5”. It will look and feel like a true cave experience!
